When schools closed due to COVID-19 in March of 2020, we knew that MIND needed to find ways to support students' learning at home. In addition to making our ST Math program free to access for the remainder of the school year, we began creating additional resources to support schools, students, and families. This gave me the opportunity to help create something that is very near and dear to my heart.
When I first came to MIND, I thought we could be the PBS of edtech. Having grown up on Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and 3-2-1 Contact, I envisioned us creating mathematical programming that would not only support learners, but change the way people thought and felt about math. Creating a library of video programming was something that we just didn't have the bandwidth or budget for, but when schools closed, we were able to create something close to my PBS-like dreams.
Developing our MathMINDs was a project I worked on with our Lead Mathematician Brandon Smith and Content Development Manager Nina Wu. The goal was to provide a resource for families to experience math at home together in new ways. For 8 weeks, we produced videos, blogs, and digital resources that covered topics like experiencing math through story, and math in the world around us.
In addition to planning and outlining the series with Brandon and Nina, I worked on video edits, blogs, social promotion and more.
Here is one of my favorite videos in the series, where Nina takes the viewers on a math walk around her neighborhood. It captures exactly the kind of programming I wished we could have made more of.
Below you can see one of the weekly blogs. You can find the entire series on our Instructional Resources page on the ST Math website.
